The European Union is currently highly dependent on imports of Critical Raw Materials (CRM), especially in strategic sectors such as renewable energies, which are of great importance to the economy and are of strategic value to the European market. Therefore, there is an urgent need to create more sustainable and resilient raw material value chains in the EU.
In this context, one of the sectors most affected by this dependence is the silicon value chain. A strategic component for the EU's competitiveness, as it is one of the main elements used in the photovoltaic sector, essential to help Europe reach its climate targets.
RESILEX (Resilient Enhancement for the Silicon Industry Leveraging the European matrix) is a project that has the overall objective of demonstrating 7 innovative technological and business solutions covering the entire Silicon value chain to contribute to improving the resilience and sustainability of the Silicon value chain. RESiLEX will assess the economic, social and environmental impact by identifying and developing open source policy formulation recommendations to accelerate the replication of those with the highest potential while addressing the cross-cutting challenges of the European mining industry as a whole with an eighth cross-cutting pilot demonstration. The project will have a duration of 4 years starting 01/06/2022 and ending 31/05/2026, with a total budget of more than 10 million euros. It is funded by the European Union's Horizon Europe research and development programme under the call HORIZONTE-CL4-2021-RESILIENCE-01-07 and contract No. 101058583.
